Challenge Cup – Strokeplay – May 25

Feels like the May competition came round very quickly after April. Another handicap qualifying competition this month, a strokeplay event off full handicap. Still no rain since last month so yet again and thankfully the course is getting better as we move towards the Summer months.

16 members for this competition and yet again another new young Overton lad joining the group – welcome Calden Clash hope to see you back for many more.

It is great to see alot of our newer members regularly embracing the monthly comps – you are all now becoming the ‘new guard’ and its even better knowing that many of you have already got involved in the running, organisation and committee of the club. Thanks to all of you.

Strokeplay leaves no real margin for error with every hole having to be completed there are ‘card wreckers’ everywhere at Town Meadow. Who was gonna keep their nerve for 18 holes and come out victorious.??

The scoring range was wide with GROSS scores ranging from 86 down to 65 and NET (after handicap from 66 down to PAR). We had no sub par par rounds for this competition – most unusual.

This months winners rostrum goes as follows……….

Nearest the pins – I am delighted to say our 2 new Overton/Laverstoke youngsters Daniel Spooner and Calden Clash beat everybody on this Dan was 5 inches from a hole in one on the 2nd and Calden finished inches from the flag to win the Nearest in 2 on hole 7. Well done lads – hopefully the first of many wins for you both.

Andy Thomas has won the last 3 comps but no cigar in this one – he did though win the £20 raffle. Result !

The main event was a very close affair at the top of the leaderboard with 3 players all scoring NET PAR – Chris Davis (off 20), Jake Carvel (19) and Graham Bond (11). Countback came into play to determine the winner. In 3rd Place was Chris Davis, he was pipped to 2nd Place (countback on last 9 holes) by Jake and Graham deservedly took this months trophy with the lowest gross round of the day 65 but only after a countback over the last 6 holes.

Worth mentioning Henry Dearden and David Ball , 2nd and 3rd last month were both again so close to the top with net 55 and 56 shots respectively.

Well done too to all those who shot a 2 – Neil Butler (3rd), Simon Edwards and Greg Saunders both on the 14th.

Oh and of course Sue – usual top notch job in the kitchen before the game. Thanks, we love ya !!
