Club Championships – Singles Strokeplay – Sept 23

Sunday 10th September was our annual Club Major day – the prestigious annual Club Championships singles strokeplay with trophies for the lowest gross and lowest net scores. Current holders Jon Marsh (lowest gross) and his son Ed Marsh (lowest net) were out and ready to try and retain their trophies. The turnout this year was our best ever – 24 members (beating last years 23) turned out to try and become Champion Golfer of the Year.

The weather was set fair but not for long as rain threatened and finally came to dampen the mood – the course though was in great condition but slow greens was probably going to make putting tricky. It proved so. Scoring proved tricky and like last year only only 3 sub par (net) rounds were made all morning but 13 gross birdies (2’s) were recorded which is now a club competition record – congrats to all those who made a 2 and especially to ‘Clarkey’ (Neil) who made 3 of them !!

Onto the main events – best gross scores and best net scores (after handicap). In the gross competition the range of scores was wide 97 down to 63, equally net scores ranged from 70 down to 49 with only 3 sub par net rounds.

Gross scores 3rd Place Bryan Holden 66 and runner up again with 65 Mike England.

Net scores 3rd Place Andrew Thomas 53 (70-17) and runner up Chris Davis 51 (70-28)

Our WINNERS – 2 new firsts for the Club Championships – were Tom Dearden and Neil Clarke. Tom shot a gross 65 to win the coveted Champion golfer of the year trophy and Neil, winning his first singles trophy (what a one to win with a hangover !!),with a net 50 (68-18) won the lowest net score trophy. Huge congratulations to both players, great rounds of golf and well deserved winners – sure they’ll be back next year to defend their titles.

Great efforts from all the chasing pack too – quite a few missing out on glory by one shot and the dreaded ‘countback’ – oh what could have been !! See below for full gross and net scoresheets.

Nearest the pin winners were Kevin McKenzie (Hole 2) and that man Neil Clarke again (Hole 6)…….oh and Phil Jarrett ran off quickly to spend the £20 he won on the raffle 🙂
